LATEST | New City has now taken massive steps toward potential NHL franchise
While the National Hockey League isn't too focused on expansion now, there's no doubt that it could become a reality in the coming years.
Several cities across the United States, as well as Quebec in Canada, have been mentioned as potential targets for NHL expansion, but one location is set to take a massive step towards being able to have a professional hockey team.
According to Chris Johnston of TSN, Houston's Toyota Center is set to install ice-making equipment that will make it NHL-ready if the league decides to expand or relocate to the city.
"Of note: The renovation underway at Houston's Toyota Center will include the installation of ice-making equipment to ensure the building can ultimately be NHL-ready."
Houston is no stranger to professional hockey. From 1972 to 1978, the city had a World Hockey Association franchise called 'Aeros.' Then, from 1994 to 2013, a team with the same name played in the American Hockey League and was the NHL affiliate for mainly the Minnesota Wild, apart from one year they were for the Dallas Stars.
If the NHL expands or relocates in the coming years, there's no doubt that Houston will be one city on the top of their list, along with others like Salt Lake City, Quebec City, Atlanta, etc.
