MAJOR | Canucks buying out Ekman-Larsson is screwing the Coyotes big time
The Canucks announced earlier today that they had bought out the four years remaining on the veteran defenseman's contract, Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The defenseman was acquired from the Canucks two summers ago when Jim Benning pulled a 'blockbuster' deal to acquire OEL and Conor Garland.
At that point, the Coyotes elected to retain a minor part of OEL's salary. NHL teams are only allowed to retain the salary of 3 players, and the Yotes have been known to monetize this asset over the years.
Now that OEL was bought-up and his contract divided over the next 8 years, the Coyotes will also feel the effect of this buy-out since they'll lose that retained salary spot for that same time.
''Breaking: #Yotes lose one of their 3 retained salary (RS) slots for the next 8 years.
We recently learned that a buyout on an RS contract results in the original team losing an RS slot for the whole buyout duration.
We've already updated the site to reflect that new understanding!''
The Canucks have now closed a chapter of their recent history, and they've chosen to move on from it. Now that they've made a little room on their salary cap what's Patrik Allvin's next move?
