Official Statement from the NHL Player Safety department regarding Sergachev's attack on Garland
The Canucks fell short to the Lightning yesterday in a 5-4 loss. But the game itself is not what retained the most attention: Hughes' comment and the Sergachev sucker punch to Garland poured the media outlets.
The Canucks were on the power play, they've pulled the netminder for the extra player. Andrei Vasilevskiy takes a shot and leaves no rebound for Conor Garland who's standing on the doorstep. Mikhail Sergachev doesn't really appreciate Garland standing there and he lets him know, it develops into a little scrum in front of Tampa Bay's crease and leads to this event.
No penalty was called on the play and it caused major consternation all around the league's fans, but the NHL Player Safety Department retaliated today and they've fined Tampa Bay's defenseman to the maximum amount allowable under the CBA:
Conor Garland issued a response regarding the matter:
Still, if it's worthy of a fine, why is not worthy of a penalty? Do you think that fine is enough?
