In recent years, the NHL (as well as other professional sports leagues) has seen an extreme increase in promotions and ads related to gambling. Notably, icons such as Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky have been seen in gambling sites such as BetMGM advertisements. Gambling site advertisements are regularly seen at NHL arenas and on television.

This sudden influx of gambling sites in the sports world has come with great controversy. Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto was suspended 41 games for gambling-related issues. The Senators also sport Bet99 advertisements on their helmets.

Montreal Canadiens reporter Stu Cowan had some choice words in a tweet from Saturday night while watching Hockey Night in Canada:

(1/2)I'm old enough to remember when Hockey Night in Canada had Peter Puck to teach kids about hockey instead of constant ads to teach them how to become gamblers.

(2/2) Saturday really has become Gambling Night in Canada instead of Hockey Night in Canada. The gambling ads are non-stop. #Habs #HabsIO

Peter Puck was a cartoon character that premiered on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada during the 1970s. The animated character also returned briefly in the late 2000s but has since taken a backseat to other intermission shows and gambling, as mentioned in earlier advertisements.
