REPORT | Tyler Myers trade reports confirmed: Journalist gives the timeline on an incoming trade

Identified as one of the Canucks' worst off-season signings, Tyler Myers has been involved in trade rumours since the day he arrived in Vancouver. Now entering the last season of his 5-year and $30M deal, everything suggests the defenseman already has a foot out of the door.

A few days prior to the draft, it was reported that the Canucks and the Sharks had worked out a deal sending Myers to California for Kevin Labanc in a one-for-one deal. It appeared that the one thing that prevented this deal from falling through was the $5M bonus Myers is due mid-way through September. The journalist Harman Dayal from the Athlectic addressed the subject and gave a timetable on what was next for the Canucks and Myers.

The Canucks are short on a right-handed shot defenseman at the moment. Perhaps Ethan Bear's unexpected injury played a factor in this, but if they were to move Myers, this would place «injury-prone» Noah Juulsen in a top4 seat. While Juulsen has demonstrated he can take care of business, his inability to remain healthy is a concern. If the Canucks chose to move on from Myers, Allvin would have to determine what to do with the $6M they'd be freeing up and if they could sign a good replacement. On the flip side, Myers could also be moved as a rental closer to the deadline and provide positive assets for the team.

Dayal also pointed out that any reasonable team would want to wait until the $5M signing bonus is paid in mid-September but seemed confident that he wasn't going to be a Canuck by the end of the year.


We can safely assume that Myers will be traded sometime this year. The question is, do they feel they can move on from him right away and gamble with the player who replaces him? Or do they wait it out and send him elsewhere at the deadline?
