Flames release former Canucks prospect moments after signing him
The Calgary Wranglers, American Hockey League affiliate of the Calgary Flames, are set to begin their second round playoff series on Friday against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, but will be doing so without a former Vancouver Canucks prospect.
On Tuesday, the Wranglers announced in a post on social media that they've released defenceman Joni Jurmo from his amateur try-out contract, likely ending his 2023-24 season.
"The Wranglers have released defencemen Etienne Morin and Joni Jurmo from their ATOs and they have been removed from the playoff roster." The Wranglers said.
Jurmo, 22, was traded to the Calgary Flames, along with Andrei Kuzmenko, a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, and defenseman prospect Hunter Brzustewicz in exchange for Elias Lindholm.
At the conclusion of his season in Finland, the Flames announced that they've signed Jurmo to a two-year, entry level contract and subsequently inked an amateur try-out contract with the AHL's Calgary Wranglers for the remainder of the season. However, Jurmo never appeared in a game for the Wranglers and as mentioned, was released from his ATO on Tuesday.
The Espoo native spent the 2023-24 season in Liiga, which is Finland's highest division, with Ilves and KooKoo. In 46 games this season, Jurmo had five points (one goal, four assists), 14 penalty minutes and was a plus-three.
