According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Casey DeSmith has signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Stars worth $3 million ($1 million AAV). DeSmith will replace Scott Wedgewood as the backup to Jake Oettinger.
DeSmith, 32, joined the Vancouver Canucks just before the 2023-24 season in a trade with Montreal that saw Tanner Pearson head to the Canadiens. In 29 games for the Canucks, DeSmith had a record of 12-9-6 with a 2.85 goals against average, an .896 save percentage and one shutout.
With the departure of Casey DeSmith, it's going to be interesting to see what Patrik Allvin does, if anything, to address their backup goaltending situation. It's possible we could see them add a veteran goaltender this summer, but there's also a chance that they hand over the backup reigns on a full-time basis to Latvian netminder Arturs Silovs, who had a great Stanley Cup Playoffs in Vancouver.
DeSmith played an important part in the Canucks' success, hopefully he isn't as great when the two clubs meet next season.
