General Manager Patrik Allvin has a decision to make after a former top-ten pick was made available to the Vancouver Canucks and other teams around the National Hockey League.

The Vancouver Canucks continue to evaluate their options on the trade market when it comes to adding to their roster despite Patrik Allvin & Jim Rutherford making all of their pending unrestricted free agents available, signalling that they know this isn't going to be a successful season.
Earlier on Friday, Vancouver's biggest rival, the Edmonton Oilers, completed a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins which saw the two clubs swap starting goaltenders - Stuart Skinner and Tristan Jarry, along with some other assets and in order to make the money work, General Manager Kyle Dubas was forced waive a former top-ten pick, who is now available to all teams around the league, including the Canucks.

Shortly after the trade between Edmonton and Pittsburgh was made official, the Penguins announced on their public relations account on X that they've placed defenseman Matt Dumba on waivers.
"In a corresponding move, defenseman Matt Dumba has been designated non-roster for the purpose of being placed on waivers at 2:00 PM." Penguins PR said.
Dumba, 31, was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2012 Entry Draft and has gone on to appear in 748 games in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins, the latter of whom acquired him in the offseason.
The Regina, Saskatchewan native is in the final year of his contract and is earning $3.75 million USD, which some teams would have no issue adding, while others like the Vancouver Canucks, who are currently first in the NHL's waiver order, would need to move some money around to make the addition of Matt Dumba work.
Vancouver has had interest in Matt Dumba going back a couple years when they were among teams to kick tires on the blueliner leading up to the trade deadline during the 2022-23 season, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox.
"Guerin held steadfast that he would not move Dumba midseason unless it was for a comparable return. Multiple teams - Edmonton, Vancouver, and Ottawa among them - reportedly kicked tires." Fox said.

In 11 games this season with the Penguins, Dumba has registered three points (one goal, two assists), 11 penalty minutes and is a minus-five while averaging 14:56 of ice time per night.
