A former National Hockey League executive has sadly passed away at the age of 78 and tributes have poured in from the teams he worked for during his career.
2025 has been a tough year for hockey as we've sadly lost a number of former NHLers including
including Frank Caprice, who played 102 games with the Vancouver Canucks between 1983 and 1998.
Recently, the hockey world has lost another member and an executive who spent a decade in the front office with the St. Louis Blues.
Former St. Louis Blues President & CEO Mark Sauer passes away
In a post on social media in late May, the St. Louis Blues announced the passing of Mark Sauer, their former President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the age of 78.
"We are saddened to learn about the passing of former Blues president Mark Sauer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends in this time of mourning as we celebrate his contributions to our organization." the Blues said.
St. Louis Blues chairman Tom Stillman
released a statement regarding the passing of Mark Sauer, saying that the former team President was an exceptional leader for the organization and did an incredible job helping the organization achieve success during his ten year tenure.
"Mark Sauer delivered exceptional leadership for the Blues organization at a key time in our history, overseeing a decade in which the Blues ranked among the 10 winningest clubs in the NHL and achieved the franchise's only Presidents' Trophy. His management decisions, like the hiring of Larry Pleau as general manager, along with his constant focus on serving fans and partners alike, set the team on a steady and successful path that continues today. We join his family and friends in the sports industry in celebrating Mark Sauer's positive influence on the St. Louis Blues and the entire St. Louis community." Stillman said.
During his time with the St. Louis Blues, the team won their only Presidents' Trophy in franchise history, which came during the 1999-00 season, and they made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight seasons under Mark Sauer.
Prior to joining the Blues, Sauer worked as an executive in Major League Baseball, including as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the
St. Louis Cardinals and President & CEO of the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
