The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially announced a coaching change
After losing in Game 7 in the first round to the Boston Bruins, fans knew that change was on the horizon for the Toronto Maple Leafs and on Thursday, the organization made a big decision on the team's future behind the bench.
According to Chris Johnston of TSN, the Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the firing of Head Coach Sheldon Keefe after five seasons behind the bench.
"The #leafs have fired head coach Sheldon Keefe. He has two years remaining on a contract extension that hasn't even officially kicked in yet." Johnston said.
General Manager Brad Treliving commented on the decision and thanked Keefe for his nine years of dedication to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
"Today's decision was difficult. Sheldon is an excellent coach and a great man; however, we determined a new voice is needed to help the team push through to reach our ultimate goal. We thank Sheldon for his hard work and dedication to the organization over the last nine years, and wish him and his family all the very best." Treliving said.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' front office will now commence their search for a new Head Coach in the days and weeks ahead, with several intriguing candidates available, including Craig Berube, who won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019.
