The verdict is in for Sam Lafferty and his future with the Canucks
With Patrik Allvin focused on re-signing some of his big name free agents including Filip Hronek, Nikita Zadorov, among others, one pending UFA that's gone under the radar is Sam Lafferty.
Lafferty had a solid season with the Canucks and at times throughout the 2023-24 campaign, was the team's best bottom-six forward. But it appears his time with the Vancouver Canucks organization could be coming to a close.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Lafferty will be hitting the market as an unrestricted free agent at 12 pm ET on Monday, July 1st.
Pagnotta added that the Canucks and Lafferty have spoken recently about a new contract and while he hasn't closed his door on a return to Vancouver, he seems keen on testing the open market and seeing what's out there.
"Sam Lafferty is expected to hit the free agent market. The Canucks and Lafferty's camp have spoken recently, and he hasn't closed the door on Vancouver, but he seems interested in exploring his options at this moment." David Pagnotta said.
Lafferty, 29, had the best season of his National Hockey League career so far, setting new highs in goals and points. In 79 games, the Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania native had 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists), 32 penalty minutes and was a plus-four.
While the Canucks understandably are focused on their more prominent free agents at this time, it wouldn't be a shock if Allvin circles back on July 1st and brings Sam Lafferty back on a lower-term contract, one or two years for example.
