It seems evident that DeSmith will be Demko's backup to kick things off in 2023. This leaves five goaltenders with contracts allowing them to play in the AHL. The Canucks already have Arturs Silovs and Spencer Martin on NHL deals. They also added Nikita Tolopilo, Zach Sawchenko and Jonathan Lemieux via free agency.

The Canucks now have seven goaltenders, before even talking about the ones under contract with the Kalamazoo wings, for six spots, which had Elliotte Friedman wondering if Martin wouldn't be a fit elsewhere. Earlier today, the insider elaborated on a potential fit on his 32 Thoughts Podcast.

As reported earlier this week, the Colorado Avalanche are in a tough spot. Alexandar Georgiev will patrol their crease as the number one drive. However, they learned that Pavel Francouz would be out of commission for a little while, and they could be on the market for a temporary replacement.

When Demko was healthy, Martin had his fair share of workload and did an acceptable job early in the season. Perhaps he could be a temporary solution for the Avalanche? Not only would that help the Canucks in opening up a roster spot, but maybe they could get an asset back. Would Martin be worth a late-round draft pick?

Martin spent three seasons in the earlier stages of his career in the Avalanche's organization. They initially made a 3rd Round Draft Pick back in 2013.
