After a strong showing at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship, Vancouver Canucks prospect Arturs Silovs has earned a major award in his home country.
According to The Baltic Times, Silovs was named Latvia's Athlete of the Year after leading the nation to a bronze medal performance at the World Championship, which marked their first-ever medal in their history.
Goaltender Arturs Silovs, who helped Latvia earn its first ever medal at the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championships, was named Latvia's Athlete of the Year."
Silovs, 22, appeared in all ten of Latvia's games at the tournament. Initially, it was expected that Silovs would be the backup for Latvia, but after Ivars Punnenovs allowed two quick goals to Canada in the opening game, Silovs was put in and head coach Harijs Vitolins never looked back.
In those ten games, Silovs had a record of 7-3 with a 2.20 goals against average, a .921 save percentage and one shutout. His performance earned him Best Goaltender of the Tournament and was also named Most Valuable Player.
Congratulations to Arturs Silovs on this massive accomplishment. If Abbotsford fail to make the AHL Playoffs, there's a very good chance that Silovs will be called upon once again by Latvia as they look to defend their bronze medal this spring in Czechia.
