The Canucks blockbuster deal with the Calgary Flames could have been even bigger, with the Canucks looking to check multiple boxes.

Rick Dhaliwal said the Canucks and Flames discussed Tanev in parts of these trade talks, but they couldn't decide on a return for the d-man.

The belief was the Flames are asking for a first round pick for Tanev, that's when talks broke down,
Dhaliwal said.

Dhaliwal said the Canucks will continue to look into Tanev, and if failing to acquire him before the deadline they will likely pursue him as a free agent.

He added that the Canucks are not done, while not urgently looking they still plan to add to their league leading team.

The Canucks have some premium assets and a bit of cap space left, we'll see what Rutherford and Allvin have still planned ahead.
