Significant development regarding Spencer Martin's status in Vancouver: About to be offered for free?
Spencer Martin has been an interesting story in Vancouver. According to Elliotte Friedman, the 28-year-old maybe placed on waivers, if the Canucks are unable to find a trade partner.
Martin, a third round pick by Colorado, hadn't had too many NHL opportunities going into the last season. He was projected as the 3rd string goalie. As the season went on, due to some struggles by fellow goalies Thatcher Demko and Collin Delia, Martin found himself as a starting goalie for the Canucks for a little while.
Martin played fine, especially for a 3rd string goalie but the Canucks struggled and so did Martin's numbers. Martin played in 29 games, registering an .871 save percentage and a 3.99 GAA.
This off-season the Canucks traded Tanner Pearson in a trade to bring back Casey Desmith, a well-known back up. This allowed the Canucks to have a tandem of Demko-Desmith, leaving Martin expendable.
Martin's contract carries a cap hit of $762,500 per year. It is possible that a team picks him up from waivers. We will see if a trade can be done beforehand for the Canucks.
