The Vancouver Canucks have high hopes in improving their defensive core this offseason, but General Manager Patrik Allvin has received some discouraging news from the Buffalo Sabres when it comes to their pursuit of defenseman Bowen Byram.

The Vancouver Canucks have already made some big moves this offseason, most notably of which came when the team announced they finally came to terms with veteran goal scorer Brock Boeser on a seven-year deal, after months of speculation that he would be testing the open market.

But, out of all the signings and trades that already took place, none of them really addressed the big holes on their blue line, and their top target is seemingly now untouchable.
Since the start of the 2024-25 NHL season, the Canucks and Bowen Byram have been strongly linked in numerous reports, detailing the fact that Byram is exactly what Vancouver needs to backup Captain Quinn Hughes.
Adams said he remains open to trading Byram in a deal that improves the Sabres current roster, but isn't interested in futures.

Unfortunately, their pursuit of Byram will only be able to be competed if they come together on a trade, because Sabres GM Kevyn Adam confirmed today that they will be matching any and every offer sheet that comes their way.
Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams told reporters Wednesday that the team has been strategic in planning in case of a Byram offer sheet and are "absolutely" prepared to match one to retain his services.
The 23 year old star d-man had 7 goals and 24 assists for 31 points in 82 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season while averaging 22:42 of ice time.
Standing at 6'1, the left-hand shot is coming off of a two-year, $7.7 million deal with an annual cap hit of $3.85 million and would be a great addition if they are able to get a deal done, but as it stands attempting an offer sheet would only hurt their chances completing a trade.
