Call-Up: Vancouver Canucks Announce Roster Move With Top Goalie Prospect Ty Young
The Vancouver Canucks have announced today that they have completed a roster move to call-up goalie prospect Ty Young from the ECHL Kalamazoo Wings to the AHL Abbottsford Canucks.
The expectations for the 20-year-old netminder and 2022 5th-round pick were not that high entering this season. After a strong showing in training camp and pre-season, he clearly exceeded those expectations. Young was originally supposed to start the year in the AHL, but unfortunately he wassent down right to the East Coast Hockey League. The demotion wasn't due to his ability, but because of the lack of roster space as the AHL already have their goalies slots solidified, but after 2 games in the Coast, they could not ignore Young any longer.
Along with his incredible play in the ECHL, where he has achieved a ridiculous 1.01 goals against average, 0.974 save percentage, and stopped 74 out of 76 shots faced. The call-up comes in response to an unfortunate situation that saw Abbottsford Canucks goalie Jiri Patera leave the game with an injury.
Young's opportunity for his first taste of American League action will be this weekend, as the Canucks are set to face the Bakersfield Condors in a back-to-back series starting Saturday, November 9th. While Nikita Tolopilo is expected to earn the start and potentially both, he's been struggling lately. Despite a very strong 3-0-0-0 start, the Belorussian netminder has allowed 11 goals on 36 shots over his last two starts. There has not been an update on Patera's injury, but with the struggles of Arturs Silovs in the NHL, AHL goalies are now competing for a backup job to Kevin Lankinen. Ty Young is looking to take advantage of that opportunity as he is set to make his AHL debut this weekend.
