Former Vancouver Canuck Quinn Hughes shared details about how his trade to the Minnesota Wild on Friday evening went down when speaking with reporters on Sunday.
Following months of rumors, the Vancouver Canucks did what many thought was unfathomable and traded their captain and greatest defenseman in franchise history, Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.
Given the circumstances and the fact Hughes was destined to leave the club as a free agent in the summer of 2027, the Vancouver Canucks did quite well with the return for their captain, landing defenseman Zeev Buium, forwards Marco Rossi & Liam Ohgren, along with a first round pick in 2026.
"Like Jim, I would also like to thank Quinn for everything thing he has done in Vancouver. Quinn played hard, lead by example and did a lot of very good things for the Canucks. Trading away a player of this caliber is never easy and easy decision to make, but it was one we had to do to make our team better. We are so excited to add a solid centre in Marco, a good young blueliner in Zeev and a versatile forward in Liam. This year's draft is a strong one so acquiring a first-round pick was also a big part of this deal." Patrik Allvin said.
Quinn Hughes details how trade from Vancouver Canucks to Minnesota Wild happened
Less than 48 hours after being dealt, Quinn Hughes made his debut with the Minnesota Wild as they hosted the Boston Bruins on Sunday and as everyone could've predicted, he made a quick impact, scoring his first goal with his new club less than a minute into the third period.
"QUINN comes up HUGHES with his first @mnwild goal! 😉"
After the game, Hughes met with reporters for the first time and gave some insight into how the trade between the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild went down.
"Yeah, I mean I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but I have the ultimate respect for Jim Rutherford and Francesco Aquilini and the Aquilini family. They were first class with everything that was going on and obviously it was a tough situation, but I felt like it was time and I think Jim did too. Jim and Pat, Pat Brisson my agent, he was a beast, I'm very lucky to have him, but they were kind of talking a lot about places I might feel comfortable and Jim was amazing with that, he cared about the person. He wanted me to go where he thinks I would be happy and yeah." Hughes said.
It's never easy to move on from a franchise cornerstone like Quinn Hughes, but the Vancouver Canucks did the best they could and ended up getting a decent return for the blueliner, with Zeev Buium having an instant impact on his new team yesterday, helping them kick off their five-game road trip with a 2-1 win over New Jersey.
The Vancouver Canucks will have to wait until the spring to face their former captain as the two teams are set to do battle in Minnesota on Thursday, April 2nd.
