An NHL insider has provided an update on contract negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and forward Kiefer Sherwood, who can become a UFA next summer.

While the Vancouver Canucks might not have had the season they wanted last year, forward Kiefer Sherwood was one of just a few bright spots on the team's roster.
In his first year as a Vancouver Canuck, Sherwood set career-highs in goals (19), assists (21) and points (40), while also setting the NHL's new single-season hits record, all of which are going to set him up for a nice payday following the 2025-26 campaign, whether that be in Vancouver or elsewhere.

NHL insider gives update on contract talks between Vancouver Canucks & Kiefer Sherwood

Earlier this summer, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin said on Sportsnet 650 radio that the organization has begun preliminary discussions on a contract extension with Kiefer Sherwood and his camp.
"In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 650, GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood's camp." Pro Hockey Rumors said.

In the last 12 weeks since Allvin's comments, a contract extension hasn't been completed, Kiefer Sherwood made a significant change off the ice, as he switched agents and is now represented by Rich Evans and Judd Moldaver of Wasserman Hockey.
There was some hope that after Sherwood changed his representation that contract talks would pick back up again, but it looks like the exact opposite has happened, unfortunately.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Canucks like what Kiefer Sherwood brings to the lineup on a nightly basis, but haven't fully begun negotiations on a new contract quite yet.
"Kiefer Sherwood had career year last season with Vancouver, scoring 19 goals and tallying 40 points. He's in the final year of his contract and while the Canucks like what he brings to the table for them, they haven't jumped into negotiations just yet." Pagnotta said.

From the Vancouver Canucks perspective, it makes sense as to why they haven't gone past preliminary discussions on a contract extension yet with Kiefer Sherwood as they'll want to ensure last year wasn't a fluke and he can sustain that production before handing out probably double what he's earning right now.
After giving Nils Hoglander a three-year, $3 million AAV deal before the start of the 2024-25 campaign because he registered 24-goals the season prior, only for him to register eight last year, the Canucks are probably bit hesitant to hand out another multi-year deal to a bottom-six forward without knowing that he can produce on a yearly basis and won't be just a "one-off".
