An analyst shared recently how important the 2025-26 season is for Vancouver Canucks forward Evander Kane, who is set to become a free agent next summer.

Patrik Allvin's biggest splash this summer came via trade as he acquired veteran forward Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Kane, a nine-time 20+ goal scorer, is expected to help put the puck in the back of the net for a Canucks team that finished 24th in the National Hockey League in goals for last year with 236.
While it's still very early in the 2025-26 season, the Vancouver Canucks need to see more out of Evander Kane starting today against the St. Louis Blues and the 34-year-old is hoping to make his mark with his hometown, especially since it's such an important year with him, which may culminate with him hitting the open market on Canada Day.

Matt Sekeres and Blake Price of Sekeres and Price spoke about Evander Kane's start to the new season, his first as a member of the team and touched on the fact that the Vancouver native should've "pushed it" a little more throughout training camp and preseason.
"It's a really important year for Evander Kane. Like the Canucks are not only reliant on him, he's the only NHL forward they added this summer, despite the fact they went into the summer looking for 2 to 3, including a second line center. He comes after the substitution of Pius Suter, who signed a pretty team-friendly contract with St. Louis. I mean, a lot of recriminations there. I was okay. I thought Evander was a worthwhile reclamation project. I didn't love they had to take him on full ticket from the Edmonton Oilers at more than $5 million. We were told that there were three teams that really, really wanted him and that was the cost of acquisition. Edmonton didn't want to retain. Okay, fair enough, but then you saw the Suter salary come in and you went 'wait a second' and he can play center and he's a primary penalty killer. To me, that was not a good trade for the Vancouver Canucks this summer." Price said.

He added, "Beyond that, personally, Evander's in the final year of his contract, he's looking to extend his career, right? So, he's got a big stake in this, the Vancouver Canucks have a big stake in him. I was willing to give him the veteran card through preseason, he said he didn't fancy playing a single preseason game. I was willing to give him all of those passes, those veteran passes in preseason, fair enough, but if he comes out slow, you know, then I think he might have some recriminations there too, right? Maybe you did need to push it a little more, maybe the coaching staff did need to push him a little more."
After missing all of the regular season last year due to injury, but suiting up for most of Vancouver's playoff run, it still might take Evander Kane a little bit to get back up to full speed and that's okay.
However, if you get into late November, December and then into the New Year and he's still not the player that you were hoping for him to be, could the Vancouver Canucks look to replace him? Do they try to move him out and fill that role with someone else who could be more effective?
Only time will tell how the first few months of the season go for Evander Kane, but it's safe to say that all Vancouver Canucks fans are pulling for him and want him to succeed with his hometown club.
