A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on Canada Day next summer, is reportedly working on a contract extension.
With the emergence of Thatcher Demko, the Vancouver Canucks made the decision to not re-sign Jacob Markstrom in the fall of 2020, allowing the former to take on the full-time starting role, while the latter joined their Western Canadian rivals, the Calgary Flames.
After four seasons as a Calgary Flame, the team
traded him to the New Jersey Devils and with less than nine months to go until he's eligible to hit the open market, it looks like the two sides are starting to discuss a new deal.
Former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom reportedly working on contract extension
Earlier this month, The Fourth Period reported that the New Jersey Devils and Jacob Markstrom's camp are working on a multi-year contract extension, with Kevin Weekes of ESPN adding that the former Canuck was initially offered $5 million AAV from the club, but was unsure of the term.
"Both sides, however, have expressed a desire to extend their relationship and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald continues to negotiate a multi-year extension with Markstrom's camp, led by agent Pat Morris.
A week ago, ESPN and NHL Network's Kevin Weekes reported the Devils «initial offer was in the $5M per year range» though it is unclear how many years were pitched.
According to league sources, the hope is to secure a deal in the near future, though Markstrom is believed to be looking for a higher AAV." The Fourth Period reports.
Markstrom, a native of Gavle, Sweden, had a strong first year in The Garden State, appearing in 49 games for the Devils where he had a 26-16-6 record along with a 2.50 goals against average, a .900 save percentage and four shutouts.
The 35-year-old is earning $6 million AAV on his current deal, so ideally, he'd like to stay around that on his new contract, but if things go south in negotiations with the Devils, there's no question he could get that money on the open market as he's slated to be one of the top goaltenders available, alongside
Sergei Bobrovsky.
