A National Hockey League has given an update on the status of contract talks between forward Kiefer Sherwood's camp and the Vancouver Canucks.

While it's been a tough start to the new season for most members of the Vancouver Canucks, one player that has stood out is forward Kiefer Sherwood and with it being a contract year for him, he's setting himself up for a nice pay day next summer.
The Vancouver Canucks reportedly held preliminary discussions in early July with Sherwood and his camp, but it appears that it hasn't gone beyond that just yet, with NHL insider David Pagnotta giving an update on the matter this week.

NHL insider gives update on status of contract talks between Kiefer Sherwood & Vancouver Canucks

In an article on The Fourth Period on Tuesday, National Hockey League insider David Pagnotta revealed that the Vancouver Canucks and Kiefer Sherwood's camp have not talked about a new contract yet.
Pagnotta shared that there it a little bit of concern or worry that if Kiefer Sherwood is able to do what he did last year or perhaps even produce more than the 19 goals and 40 points he put up, then it might cost the Canucks more than they'd like to pay.
"The Canucks really liked what he did last season for them. His role and responsibilities have increased." Pagnotta said.

He added, "They haven't really gotten to the nitty-gritty of negotiations just yet. I think there's a little bit of worry that if he replicates what he did last season, or comes close to it or surpasses it, it's gonna cost them too much. He's at $1.5 million (AAV). If he puts up those numbers again, he's at least doubling (his annual salary), and I think that's a little bit of a concern from the Canuck side of things.

There have been some conversations. Yeah, they're talking, but there's a difference between talking and there's a difference between negotiating and they're not at that second stage yet."

Sherwood, a native of Columbus, Ohio, has registered three goals in three games to start the 2025-26 campaign, along with 16 hits as he looks to break his own NHL record for hits in a single season, which was 462 last year.
It makes sense for both sides to wait a bit before starting on contract negotiations, but for Kiefer Sherwood, if he's able to replicate the success he had last season, there's no question that he'll likely want to test the open market on July 1st and at least see what is out there before deciding on whether or not he wants to remain in Vancouver.
