A potential replacement for Vancouver Canucks unrestricted free agent forward Brock Boeser has been identified just over six weeks until the market opens on Canada Day.
The Vancouver Canucks will be very busy over the summer as they try to fill some holes on their roster, especially in their forward group as they're in need of a second line centerman and potentially a top-six winger too if
Brock Boeser ends up leaving on July 1st.
A number of
potential free agent options have begun to emerge for Patrik Allvin and the team to consider, assuming those players end up hitting the open market, and now, another potential target has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Brock Boeser.
Potential replacement for pending UFA Brock Boeser emerges
In an article on The Province this past weekend, Ben Kuzma took a look at a potential target and replacement for Brock Boeser for the Vancouver Canucks and it's a pretty intriguing option.
Kuzma believes that Winnipeg Jets forward
Nikolaj Ehlers, who is also set to become a free agent on July 1st, could be an option for Patrik Allvin if he makes it to the open market and isn't re-signed by Kevin Cheveldayoff.
"The unrestricted free agent also silenced his critics, who had every right to wonder if Ehlers could produce when it mattered most with just 14 career playoff points in 37 games. He responded this spring by striking for five goals in his last five games of the second round." Kuzma said about Ehlers' performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Ehlers, a native of Aalborg, Denmark, is coming off one of the best seasons production-wise of his career in the National Hockey League and because of that, he's now projected to earn upwards of $8 million annually on his next contract.
The 29-year-old has hit the 20+ goal mark in eight of his ten NHL seasons, so you in terms of his production, the Vancouver Canucks could easily replace what Brock Boeser brought to the team by bringing in Nikolaj Ehlers, but they won't be alone in their pursuit of the Danish forward.
There's no doubt that
the Winnipeg Jets will try their hardest to work out a deal with Nikolaj Ehlers to avoid him hitting the free agent market, but if he does make it to July 1st, watch for teams in need of a scoring winger such as the Carolina Hurricanes, Seattle Kraken and the Vancouver Canucks.
