In different ways, the
Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs both had disappointing seasons.
The Canucks failed to make the playoffs in a year where expectations were sky high, and the Leafs once again fell short in the second round of postseason, proving that that their current core does not have what it takes to get it done.
The Price has been set for the Vancouver Canucks to acquire Mitch Marner in free-agency
With speculation all season long that Mitch Marner is set to test free-agency and depart from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the recent elimination really makes it feel like there is no chance of him returning.
Mitch Marner had this to say on his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs
With the Vancouver Canucks in desperate need for help in the offense department, and the fact that they have a ton of cap space from Patrik Allvin making strategic cap moves through out the 2024-2025 season, you can bet they will be putting their best offer forward in order to entice Marner out West.
One aspect that can Vancouver has over other teams is that their fan base and media is similar to that of Toronto, which is many ways can be a negative, but with Marner's experience, he has proven he can handle it... At least in the regular season.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman Frank Seravalli claims that Marner will be likely demanding a contract in the ball park of seven-years, $13 million AAV, which would make him among the 10 highest paid players in the National Hockey League.
Mitch Marner in his tenure in Toronto:
- drafted 4th overall in 2015
- led team in playoff points twice
- two-time All-NHL first team
- five seasons at a 100+ point pace
- Selke finalist
One of the greatest Toronto born Maple Leafs of all-time.
So... where's he going next?
Marner is by far the hottest commodity in the market this offseason, and if the Canucks are going to lose
Brock Boeser, they will need all the help they can get, which is why Allvin will do everything in his power to offer him a big deal.
In reality, even with his ability to handle a hard media and fan base, it is unlikely that Marner will want to deal with anything close to the market like Toronto, which does not do any favors for the Canucks' efforts.
