Another potential first round draft target has emerged for the Vancouver Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin to consider before selecting 15th overall in late June.
We're a little over a month away from the start of the National Hockey League's 2025 Entry Draft, which will be decentralized this year and held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
For the second time in the last four drafts, the Vancouver Canucks
will hold the 15th overall pick, a selection they used on
Jonathan Lekkerimaki back in 2022 and this time around, there are some very intriguing prospects that Patrik Allvin will need to consider before announcing the pick on June 27th.
Another first round draft target emerges for the Vancouver Canucks
In recent weeks, a number of potential options have been mentioned for the Vancouver Canucks to use that 15th overall pick on
including Carter Bear, a left winger from the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips who finished the year with 82 points (40 goals, 42 assists) in 56 games.
Now, another target has emerged for Patrik Allvin, with Dave Hall of Canucks Army mentioning another forward from the Western Hockey League as a possibility for Vancouver at 15th overall, that being Braeden Cootes.
"He's a tireless competitor on the ice, providing a real «Energizer Bunny» brand with his non-stop motor. He's a responsible, all-situations (right-shot) pivot who thrives in all three zones, bringing a pest-like forecheck that wears down opponents." Hall said about Cootes' game.
The 18-year-old centerman is coming off his second full season with the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds where he wore the 'C' on his chest and registered 63 points (26 goals, 37 assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-five in 60 regular season games.
After the Thunderbirds' season came to an end, Cootes was named to Canada's roster, and wore the 'C', at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship, putting up 12 points in seven games, helping his nation take home the gold medal.
Cootes is currently
currently ranked 20th among North American skaters by the National Hockey League's Central Scouting department and while taking him at 15th might be considered a reach by some, he would give the Vancouver Canucks another solid center prospect in their system to go along with the likes of
Aatu Raty,
Linus Karlsson,
Nils Aman and
Riley Patterson, and could be a legit option for the 2C role in a few years.
