New York Rangers Officially Complete Trade Involving Former Vancouver Canucks Star J.T. Miller
The J.T. Miller trade has now officially been completed on Tuesday morning following an announcement from the New York Rangers ahead of the NHL Entry Draft.
J.T. Miller trade officially completed following announcement by New York Rangers
When the New York Rangers traded that first round pick to the Vancouver Canucks on January 31st, the condition was that if they were to finish in the top-13 at the NHL Draft Lottery, then they could retain the selection and transfer an unprotected first rounder in 2026 intead.
With the pick then moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Rangers had until 7 pm ET (4 pm PT) on Wednesday to make their decision and on Tuesday morning, they announced what they're going to do.
According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the New York Rangers have opted to give up this year's first round pick, 12th overall, to the Pittsburgh Penguins, thus completing the J.T. Miller trade.
LeBrun added that the Rangers could use next year's first round pick at the trade deadline if they're able to bounce back and are in contention for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Rangers have officially decided on sending the 12th overall pick in Friday's draft to Pittsburgh (the conditional 1st originally traded to Van for JT Miller, then flipped to Pitt by Van). Part of the thinking in keeping next year's 1st Rd pick instead is that it might be a trade chip next season at the deadline if Rangers bounce back and contend." LeBrun said.
Now that the National Hockey League's draft order is officially set, the Vancouver Canucks are going to continue to weigh their options with their own first round pick (15th overall) on whether or not they'll keep the pick or trade it away.
If Patrik Allvin holds onto the pick, there will be a number of great options to potentially chose from,
including Kashawn Aitcheson of the OHL's Barrie Colts or Carter Bear of the WHL's Everett Silvertips, if either player are still available when the Canucks announce their selection.
