A former Vancouver Canuck may be in the mix to become the next captain of the New York Rangers next season, replacing Jacob Trouba who was traded back in early December.

The New York Rangers are just one of three teams in the National Hockey League that doesn't currently have a captain, along with the Boston Bruins - who traded Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers in March, as well as the San Jose Sharks, who had Logan Couture wearing the 'C', but he hasn't played since January 2024 and has ended his playing career due to an injury.
New York Rangers General Manager Chris Drury traded their captain Jacob Trouba in December to the Anaheim Ducks and for the remainder of the season, the club just had three alternate captains, but it looks like that could change in the fall.

Former Vancouver Canuck could be in the running to be New York Rangers' next captain

When speaking with reporters at his introductory press conference, newly appointed Head Coach Mike Sullivan, who parted ways with the Pittsburgh Penguins in April, raved about the strong leadership the team has in the dressing room.
"One thing that stands out from these talks is that there's a strong leadership presence in that room," Sullivan said. "Leadership comes in many forms-whether a player wears a letter or not. From my initial discussions, there's a lot of character in this group. Chris and I will work through these decisions together." Sullivan said.

There certainly won't be a shortage of candidates to wear the 'C' on their chest for the New York Rangers including Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, Vincent Trochek and even potentially former Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller.
Miller is no stranger to being apart of a team's leadership group as he spent parts of four seasons as an alternate captain with the Vancouver Canucks prior to being traded to the New York Rangers back in January.
Miller brings a lot of leadership qualities to the New York Rangers both on and off the ice and he's someone that younger players can look up to for advice and guidance throughout the long and grueling NHL season.
Mike Sullivan will take some time during training camp to get to know his new team and players, as any coach needs to do, but it wouldn't come as a shock to many if the Rangers had their next captain in place ahead of opening night of the 2025-26 season in October.
