National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman gave an update this week on Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes following rumors this summer about his future.

Throughout the offseason, rumors have been running wild regarding Quinn Hughes' future with the Vancouver Canucks after the team's President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford told reporters back in April that it might not come down to money or term with their captain, who has expressed a desire to play with his brothers at some point in his career.
Ever since then, many have been questioning if Quinn Hughes will sign a contract extension with the club or will he walk to free agency following the 2026-27 season or if the Vancouver Canucks would consider trading him and recently, the 25-year-old broke his silence on the rumors.
"One thing I'm really good at - or have gotten good at - is I'm very present. I can't even sign for another year, so there's nothing I can do. As far as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That's why I'm the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn't matter what's going on around me." Hughes said.

He added, "And as far as the noise around my teammates, I'm going to try to help everyone else, too, and be as good a leader as I can be. Noise doesn't bother me. It's a long year, and I'm just going to be day-to-day and focus on the short term. That's the truth, honestly."

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman gives update following rumors involving Vancouver Canucks' Quinn Hughes

During Monday's edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman spoke about the rumors involving Quinn Hughes as we enter the 2025-26 season and are only ten months away from him being eligible to sign an extension.
Friedman believes that we're in a bit of an uncertainty zone because of the difficult year the team had in Vancouver last season, adding that Hughes wants to see some improvement this time around and wants the club to win.
"It is very clear the way that Quinn sets this out, and that is that he wants to see improvement on this hockey team. He wants to win." Friedman said

He added, "Because of the year that they had last year, we're now in the uncertainty zone. There was a lot of change. There was a lot of distraction. It just wasn't fun," he added.

Friedman also said that it's a big season for Vancouver after last year's struggles and that his future with the club could come down to how this season plays out and if the Canucks are able to prove that they can be a winning hockey club.
"This is an enormous season in Vancouver and I think that Quinn, a lot of what he's going to do is going to be determined by how this year goes. He's a pretty serious guy, and he cares more about winning. He loves hockey. He's the right kind of person to have as your captain." Friedman said.

The Vancouver Canucks are hoping that these rumors will eventually die down and that they can head into the season drama-free and if they're able to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and prove to Quinn Hughes that they're committed to building a team that can be competitive on yearly basis, then perhaps it'll convince him to stick around long-term.
