The National Hockey League has made a big announcement this week regarding former Vancouver Canucks goaltender and broadcaster John Garrett.

It's been over two years since John Garrett was in the booth for Vancouver Canucks games on Sportsnet Pacific as he decided to retire following a broadcasting career that began nearly 40 years ago.
Last month, Garrett made a return to the booth, teaming up with Harnarayan Singh for the Round 1 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the duo calling the Winnipeg Jets/St. Louis Blues series.

After six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), Garrett remained with the Hartford Whalers as they moved to the National Hockey League for the 1979-80 season, making his debut at the age of 28, serving as the team's starting netminder.
During the Whalers' first season in the NHL, along with their final year in the WHA, Garrett was teammates with one of the greatest players to ever lace them up - Gordie Howe.
The 1979-80 season also marked the final year of Gordie Howe's professional hockey career, which began in 1946 with the Detroit Red Wings, who he played with until 1971 before joining the WHA two years later.
Now, 45 years after the Whalers' first season in the National Hockey League, John Garrett is finally getting credit for something he should've a long, long time ago.
During the second intermission of Friday's Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, the National Hockey League announced that they've awarded an assist to John Garrett on Gordie Howe's final goal in professional hockey.
"It was a surprise to me, too. I'm quite happy that I'm finally getting the assist on Gordie Howe's last NHL goal." Garrett said to CBC.

He went on to add, "The puck was in the corner and I went out and threw it around to Mark. And Mark, the great player that he was, made a nice play to Gordie, and Gordie kind of got a fluky goal. But it was still a pretty obvious second assist."

Following his time with the Whalers, Garrett went on to suit up for the Quebec Nordiques and the Vancouver Canucks, before ending his career during the 1986-87 season and turning his attention to broadcasting with Hockey Night in Canada.
