In the summer of 2023, the former all-star d-man singed a 1-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in hopes to finding his game again and work his magic on the powerplay.
The team was hoping for production that was once seen with the Dallas Stars, but unfortunately, the experiment was short lived as he only appeared in 14 games before being placed on long-term injury reserve.
Although cut short, his offense seemed to blossom early on by scoring 5 points in 6 games.
After going under the the knife for hip resurfacing surgery, the 32-year-old Swede was hoping to find a contract in the NHL once again, and many clubs including the Vancouver Canucks were interested.
"Vancouver among the teams that kicked tires with interest in Klingberg. However, unless something changes, the Canucks aren't as keen as others." Dreger added.
Whether or not the Canucks made a big push to sign Klingberg, it was reported by NHL insider Elliotte Freidman and Darren Dreger that he put pen to paper with the Oilers, where he will play alongside the games best in
Connor McDavid.
It is not yet known what the terms of the deal will be, but the Oilers aren't taking too much risk in getting a potentially big defenseman for their hopes in a Stanley Cup run this season.
If anything, Klingberg will provide depth and leadership to the lockeroom that is always welcomed.
