The real reason why the Vancouver Canucks, along with other NHL General Managers did not issue many offer sheets this summer comes to the surface, and it all revolves around future 1st-overall pick Gavin McKenna.

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin made it clear that heading into this important offseason, his priority was to find an upgrade at center for the second line, as well as add some depth to their blue line.
But, if you have followed the Canucks' summer at all, they really struggled to entice free-agents to sign here, which ultimately forced Allvin to switch up his strategy and look to the trade market for a player that will truly make a difference.

Vancouver Canucks, along with other NHL clubs have specific reason why they do not want to be tendering offer sheets this offseason, and it is for the chance to get Gavin McKenna

With the clear lack of moves and changes coming to the team's roster, many fans have begged the question why the team hasn't looked at issuing a strong offer sheet to some promising young RFA's.
With the Canucks owning all of their draft picks in 2026 and later on, they easily could have tendered offers to Marco Rossi (MIN), Mason McTavish (ANA), Kaapo Kakko (SEA) or even Quinn Hughes' brother Luke Hughes (NJD).
Although it sounds like it could be a good idea that fans would have liked to see, depending on which player they went after, they would of have to give up a large compensation to make it happen, which would include a first-round pick at the minimum.
With that in mind, a lot of clubs around the NHL, including the Canucks did not want to give up this pick and more, especially if you are at the bottom of the league due to the chance of drafting future 1st-overal pick Gavin McKenna.
Vancouver would obviously have to finish in the very bottom of the league in order to have any chance at getting the future superstar.
But being touted as another generational talent, teams are playing the safe route in case their season does not go to plan, just like it did for the Canucks in 2024-25 when they missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs by a wide margin.
Hopefully the Canucks can have a bounce back season in 2025-26, but if not, they may have to think about becoming sellers at the deadline in order to do everything in their power to try and get the chance to win the draft lottery.
