The results of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery are in, with the Vancouver Canucks landing the 15th overall selection.

Given the front office's comments, the team's current structure, and the critical importance of the 2025-26 season, all signs point to the Canucks being more likely to trade their 15th overall pick than to keep it.

Which NHL teams have succesfully traded away their first-round pick is the past?

Stephan Roget from the Cancucks Army writes that to get a sense of the kind of return the Canucks might fetch by trading the pick, it's worth revisiting recent deals involving similarly ranked selections to see what types of trades have taken place in past years.
In the summer of 2022, the Calgary Flames traded away Sean Monahan and a 2025 first-round conditional pick in exchange for future considerations to the Montreal Canadiens.
"The Flames were so desperate to cut cap and move on from certain veterans in 2022 that they gave up a conditional first round pick to dump Sean Monahan on the Canadiens. The condition was met when Calgary's 2024 pick fell within the top-ten, which subsequently granted the Canadiens the higher of Calgary or Florida's (previously-acquired) first rounders in this upcoming draft. That will be the Flames' own 16th overall. A year-and-a-half later, the Habs flipped Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets for a first and a third." -Roget

You might remember this one.
In 2023, the Detroit Red Wings traded away their 2023 conditional first-round pick and second-round in exchange for Filip Hronek and a fourth-rounder.
"Within fairly short order, the Canucks flipped the pick they received back from the Islanders for Bo Horvat (more on that in a moment) to the Red Wings for Filip Hronek. It's interesting to note here that the Islanders' pick was conditional and top-12 protected. Had it fallen within the top-12, it would have automatically converted to the Isle's 2024 pickwhich was 18th overall. In the end, a bit of a wash." -Roget

More notably, how can we forget trading away our former captain.
In 2023, the Canucks also traded away captain Bo Horvat in exchange for a conditional first-rounder, Aatu Räty and Anthony Beauvillier from the New York Islanders.
"You knew this was coming, and we've already covered most of the interesting stuff in the previous section. But, hey, if you were wondering whether there was precedent for the Canucks acquiring a top-six centre for a mid-round first, well, they've kind of set that precedent themselves." -Roget

When it comes to dealing this year's first-round pick, there's defintely a trade to be made for the Canucks. The question is whether management will make the right move come draft day time in June.
