The Vancouver Canucks have made the hard choice to send down promising young forward Max Sasson to the AHL Abbotsford Canucks, even though he made a strong case during training camp preseason.
With no more games left to be played in the NHL preseason, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin again made the necessary decisions that all teams have to do at this time of year, ssending down players and placing others on waivers, making them available to other clubs for free.
Vancouver Canucks assign fan favorite forward Max Sasson to the AHL Abbotsford Canucks
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Max Sasson has been assigned to Abbotsford (AHL).
Many were wondering why they sent down Sasson, because he definitely did more that enough to make the team out of camp, but the real reason was explained by Daniel Wagner of Vancouver is Awesome.
One issue is that Sasson was one of just three forwards still on the preseason roster who was exempt from waivers. This is the 25-year-old centre's final season of being exempt from waivers, and he will become waiver eligible this season if he plays another 31 games in the NHL.
That means asset management, rather than just preseason performance, had to play a factor in the Canucks' decision. Sasson could be sent down to the AHL without having to clear waivers and risk another team claiming him. That's not the case for Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, and Linus Karlsson, who are all waiver-eligible.
At the end of the day, these cuts are necessary, but in Sasson's case, you can expect to see him back up with the Canucks in no time.
