Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has sent a strong warning to teams around the National Hockey League ahead of his seventh full season with the BC-based club.

A new season is upon us and after a difficult 2024-25 campaign, the Vancouver Canucks are hoping for a better outcome this time around, with less drama surrounding the team than there was a year ago.
The team's captain, Quinn Hughes, who is eligible to sign a contract extension in July 2026, has dealt with trade rumors all summer long after comments made by President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford back in April, but he says it won't be a distraction for him heading into the new season.
"One thing I'm really good at - or have gotten good at - is I'm very present. I can't even sign for another year, so there's nothing I can do. As far as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That's why I'm the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn't matter what's going on around me." Hughes said.

In the last four seasons, Quinn Hughes has seen a lot of growth in his game on both sides of the puck, but especially offensively as he's registered 68, 76, 92 and 76 points, respectively, dating back to the 2021-22 campaign.
Entering the 2025-26 season, the Orlando, Florida native believes he can be even better, which is great news for the Vancouver Canucks, and not so great news for other teams around the National Hockey League, especially those in the Pacific Division who will see him quite a bit this year.
"I learned how to enjoy it a little bit more and how to continue to be a better leader and just get better. Get more out of everyone and make them feel more comfortable. Including trying to get my own game better. Get better at everything I'm already good at." Hughes said, according to Ben Kuzma of The Province.

He went on to add, "You never plateau. I changed my whole training with working out and I feel healthier than ever. That's a real bright spot for me coming out of camp. I can be even better than I have been."

If Quinn Hughes is able to take his game to another level, teams around the NHL will certainly need to watch out, and it wouldn't come as a surprise to everyone if the Canucks captain finishes the season as just the seventh defenseman in league history with 100+ points.
Hughes and the Canucks are set to begin their quest towards a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs tomorrow night as they host the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena, with puck drop set for just after 7 p.m. PT.
