Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin opens up about plans for first-round pick acquired in Quinn Hughes deal
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has revealed what his plans are for the first round pick he received in a trade with Minnesota for Quinn Hughes.
The day that Vancouver Canucks fans were dreading came on Friday afternoon as the club traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild after months of rumors for a package that includes Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium and a first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
"We would like to thank Quinn for his time with the Vancouver Canucks. Quinn is a great person, a great player, and one of the greatest Canucks of all time. With the circumstances surrounding JT and now Quinn, we are fortunate to acquire these very good young players from Minnesota. They will be a key part of the rebuild that we are currently in, giving us a bright future moving forward. The hockey club will continue to build with talented young players using that as a blueprint to become a contender sooner rather than later." President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford said following the Quinn Hughes trade.
Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford did fairly well given the circumstances, landing the club three solid players who can help right away along with a first round pick in a what many believe to be a deep draft in 2026 and we now know what the team's plans are for that asset as we inch closer to the New Year.
Patrik Allvin reveals his plans for first round pick he acquired in Quinn Hughes trade
Shortly after the trade was made official by the Canucks, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford held a virtual media availability where they gave their thoughts on the trade and what comes next for the organization.
After the Vancouver Canucks flipped a first round pick they got from the New York Rangers earlier this year in order to acquire defenseman Marcus Pettersson, many have been wonder if Patrik Allvin would do the same this time around, but it appears that won't be the case.
According to Patrik Allvin, the Vancouver Canucks plan on holding onto that 2026 first round pick they received from the Wild on Friday, adding that the team is now officially in a rebuilding/retooling phase.
"Patrik Allvin says the #Canucks are «retooling/rebuilding», and that the team's goal is to bring in players who are 25 years old, or younger. He also said their plan, as of now, is to use the first round pick they acquired at the draft." Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 said.
As the Vancouver Canucks enter this rebuilding/retooling phase, the next step for Allvin and Rutherford will be to offload as many of their pending unrestricted free agents as they possibly can, with reports suggesting that the club is seeking, and may receive, a first round pick in exchange for Kiefer Sherwood leading up to the March 6th deadline.
If they manage to land a first rounder for Kiefer Sherwood, the Vancouver Canucks are going to be in a very good position heading into the 2026 NHL Entry Draft in late-June.
