Even though the Vancouver Canucks have not done a ton this offseason to upgrade their roster for the 2025-26 NHL season, a new report indicates they have the ability to put the Toronto Maple Leafs in a tight spot.
With everything that went on during the 2024-25 season for the Vancouver Canucks, all the discussions this offseason have been centered around if they have enough incentives to sign a big free-agent or make a big trade, but clearly that question has been answered.
Vancouver Canucks can put teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs into a tough spot
Vancouver is still in the market to land a centre, but the trade market is viewed as a more likely and realistic route of addressing the club's greatest remaining need.
On that score, the club is actively kicking tires and exploring its options. Vancouver would execute a trade today if the deal returned a credible middle-six centre even if that centre had more of a defensive bent to their game.
Why is this an Issue for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
With General Manager Patrik Allvin's focus on the making a big trade, the team clearly has the ability to get one done as they currently sit with loads of young prospects and draft picks that teams would line up for.
Toronto on the other hand, could not compete with what the Canucks hacve to offer which make it hard for General Manager Brad Treliving to gain any traction with available players.
Vancouver having much more in terms of assets than Toronto both in terms of picks and players, there is a strong chance the team is flat out outbid by the Canucks (or other teams) and left in the dust once again.
