An insider believes that the Vancouver Canucks may have to think about a potential trade involving Quinn Hughes if the 2025-26 season doesn't go well for the club.
As the Vancouver Canucks
get set to open up training camp in less than a month, the rumors regarding Quinn Hughes' future with the club aren't going away anytime soon.
There's no question that the Vancouver Canucks are in need of a big season and if the team happens to struggle or even miss out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs again, the noise around Quinn Hughes will get louder, with one insider saying it could lead their management group to start thinking about trade possibilities.
Insider believes Vancouver Canucks may need to think of Quinn Hughes trade if season goes poorly
Rumors surrounding Quinn Hughes' future in Vancouver date back to April, when the Canucks' President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford
told reporters his next contract might not come down to money, as the captain has expressed a desire to eventually play with his brothers in the NHL one day.
"It may not boil down to money with [Quinn]. He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here." Rutherford said.
From there, rumors began to grow out of control, with
trade proposals being suggested and even some of the game's top insiders weighing in on the topic, including Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
"Elliotte Friedman: Canucks are "absolutely" on the clock when it comes to Quinn Hughes; Hughes is going to start saying "I don't want to be somewhere where I'm not gonna win" at some point" NHL Rumour Report shared on X back in early June.
Of course, Vancouver's priority is to try and get a long-term extension done with Quinn Hughes when he becomes eligible next summer, but if the team somehow finds themselves outside of the playoff picture and missing out on the postseason for the fifth time in the last six seasons, James Mirtle of The Athletic thinks that the Canucks will have to begin pondering what a trade looks like involving their captain.
"Maybe Vancouver surprises and has a huge bounce-back season that convinces their captain to stay. Feels unlikely to me, to be honest, but that's their best-case scenario. Otherwise, they have to start contemplating what a blockbuster trade might look like and whether it's all about futures." Mirtle said.
Hopefully for Vancouver Canucks fans, this season goes well, meaning everyone who didn't have a great year bounces back, they finally get some luck in the injury department and maybe, just maybe, if they can get career years out of some guys, they can push for a top-three spot in the Pacific Division.
We'll have to wait and see what the 2025-26 season has in store for the Vancouver Canucks and if they're able to succeed, especially early on, perhaps those Quinn Hughes rumors will begin to quiet down a bit.
