Vancouver Canucks Have to be Cautious When Approaching Contract Extension for Kiefer Sherwood

The Vancouver Canucks will need to be cautious when approaching a contract extension for forward Kiefer Sherwood, who could theoretically sign at any point now.
As the Vancouver Canucks are beginning preparations for training camp, which is exactly one month away, the club has also been looking to the future and examining which pending unrestricted free agents they'd be opening to discussing an extension with.
One of those pending UFAs heading into the 2025-26 season is Kiefer Sherwood, and earlier this summer, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin
said they have held preliminary talks on an extension for the American forward.
"GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood's camp." - Pro Hockey Rumors citing an appearance the Canucks GM had on Sportsnet 650 radio in early July."
Risks of signing Kiefer Sherwood to a contract extension have been identified
As with any contract a team signs, there's always some degree of risk and the possibility that they aren't able to replicate the success they had in a previous season which led to the extension in the first place.
One example of that is Nils Hoglander, who signed an extension just before the start of the 2024-25 season and saw his production drop off, going from 24 goals to just eight last year, but the team doesn't seem too worried about the Swedish forward.
In a recent article on
Canucks Army, Stephan Roget examined some of those risks that comes with signing Kiefer Sherwood to a contract extension, with the
with the NHL's new single-season hits leader becoming eligible to put pen-to-paper back on Canada Day.
Roget says that sustainability is one thing to think about when weighing the risks of signing Sherwood to a contract extension, especially since last year was just his second full season in the National Hockey League and there's no guarantee he'll have another 40-point campaign.
He also mentions that something else the Vancouver Canucks will need to ponder is waiting to signing him because if he doesn't end up hitting the 40+ point mark this year, then they could lock him up for 'cheaper', but if he does sustain this offensive production for a second consecutive year, then the risk would be potentially losing him to another club on the free agent market.
"Really, it's a bit of a backwards risk/reward situation for the Canucks when it comes to extending Sherwood, in that the 'reward' is that he comes back down to Earth a bit in 2025-26 and is signable for a little cheaper, and the 'risk' is that he doesn't and prices himself out of Vancouver." Roget said.
It doesn't seem like the Vancouver Canucks are in too much of a rush to get Kiefer Sherwood locked up to an extension, however that's how it felt last fall before they ended up signing
Nils Hoglander in early-October, so anything is possible at this point.
