Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote has announced who will replace 2025 first round pick Braeden Cootes on the NHL roster after he was sent back to junior.

After three games into the new season, the Vancouver Canucks made the decision to assign top prospect Braeden Cootes to the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds, where he'll serve as their captain for a second year.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Braeden Cootes has been assigned to the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)." the Canucks said.

The move was inevitable and that's nothing against Braeden Cootes, he's a fantastic player, but he's still young and instead of keeping him for the full nine-game trial before the first year of his entry-level contract would kick in, it made the most sense to send him back to the WHL to develop there and potentially even get the opportunity to play for Canada at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

When speaking with reporters after practice on Tuesday, Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote confirmed that forward Max Sasson will be called up from the American Hockey League before the team heads out on their five-game road trip starting tomorrow night in Dallas.
"Cootes is going back to Seattle. Sasson being recalled, per Foote." Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 said.
Sasson, 25, was making a push to be on the Vancouver Canucks' opening night roster to start the 2025-26 season, but just days before the new campaign began, Patrik Allvin assigned him to the American Hockey League.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Max Sasson has been assigned to Abbotsford (AHL)." the Canucks shared on X back on October 4th.

The Birmingham, Michigan native has had a good start to the 2025-26 season, registering two goals in two games, as the Abbotsford Canucks opened the year with back-to-back wins on the road against the Henderson Silver Knights, affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights.
Sasson got his first taste of the National Hockey League last season and went on to appear in a total of 29 games where he had seven points, before going back down to the AHL and helping Abbotsford win their first-ever Calder Cup.
As mentioned, Vancouver will open up their five-game road trip tomorrow night against the Dallas Stars, with puck drop set for just after 5 p.m. PT and because the Toronto Blue Jays will be on Sportsnet's main networks taking on the Seattle Mariners in Game 4 of the ALCS, including SN Pacific, the Canucks game will be shown nationally on Sportsnet One.
