Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet comments on the effects of the team's wild travel day
The Vancouver Canucks had quite the travel day on Saturday after being stuck in Carolina last night due to weather, but that hasn't fazed head coach Rick Tocchet.
Following last night's 2-0 shutout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Vancouver Canucks thought they were going to jet off to Toronto and enjoy a relaxing night before taking on the Maple Leafs for the second-half of a back-to-back.
Well, those plans were quashed pretty quickly as it was revealed on Saturday morning that they remained in Carolina due to weather reasons and travel concerns.
"I'm told the #Canucks did indeed stay overnight in Raleigh due to travel delays on Friday. Team is expecting to take off for Toronto shortly.
Puck drop in Toronto at 7pm tonight. Tough spot for the club to travel day of on the second leg of a back-to-back." Thomas Drance of The Athletic said.
The Canucks were finally able to leave Carolina this morning and landed in Toronto just after 12 pm ET, with only seven hours to go until puck drop.
This gave them enough time to head to their hotel, relax for a bit, maybe get a quick nap in before they headed to Scotiabank Arena for an all-Canadian clash with the Maple Leafs.
Rick Tocchet comments on "wild" travel day for the Vancouver Canucks
A few hours after the team landed in Toronto, Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet met with reporters where he announced some changes to their lineup for tonight's game.
Tocchet also opened up about the team's travel day from Carolina, calling it "wild", while acknowledging that this happens to a lot of different teams and they have to just deal with it and focus on the task at hand - defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs.
"It's just weird. You get up at 9 & you don't get into Toronto until 2. It's only like an hour flight but it's a lot of deicing. It took a while to get in from [airport]. We had a police escort but it wasn't fast today. I don't know, it was wild." Tocchet said.
He added, "These things happen to a lot different teams. You just gotta deal with it. It's not even in our mind right now. It really isn't."
Fans can tune in for tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at 4 pm PT on CBC and Sportsnet across Canada.
