Vancouver Canucks Interested in Playing the Sweepstakes for New York Rangers Chris Kreider
The Vancouver Canucks front office are constantly looking for opportunities to improve their team, so it's no surprise to hear they've been involved in talks with the New York Rangers as the team seeks a considerable shakeup.
Canucks Insider Rick Dhaliwal says that in particular, Vancouver has shown interest in making a trade for the longest tenured Ranger: Chris Kreider.
On Thursday's Donnie and Dhali show, Dhaliwal says he doesn't believe the conversation got very far due to Kreider's no-trade clause.
Someone told me the Canucks called the Rangers about Chris Kreider. But my guess is Vancouver is probably on Kreider's no-trade list - he's got a healthy one, I think, 15 teams. Rangers sent out feelers that Kreider and [Jacob] Trouba were available, so every team called, including the Canucks.
The level of urgency for New York to make a trade is likely much lower today, as the team officially dealt captain Jacob Trouba, which should provide a significant culture shock for a team that has been struggling less than a year removed from finishing first in the entire NHL.
The Canucks have been quiet on the trade front so far, but they're constantly making calls behind the scenes to inquire about players like Kreider.
More to come from New York Rangers?
The Rangers have been open for business for weeks, and trading Jacob Trouba ends a saga that stretches into last offseason.
While dealing their captain in season is sure to send a message to the room, it's hard to see the Rangers sitting on their hands.
While they acquired very few assets in moving Trouba, a 4th round pick and Urho Vaakanainen, the Rangers have opened nearly $8 million in cap space this season and next, and will almost certainly be looking to use it.
