Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford opened up recently about his expectations this season for Swedish forward Elias Pettersson.
Elias Pettersson went into the offseason with one goal in mind - find a way back to his old form and he worked extremely hard on and off the ice, including with a skills coach in Sweden, who was very impressed with what he saw.
""Elias is one of the most complex, exciting but also most elusive players I have ever come into contact with. A top athlete combined with a great artist. He can do things out on the ice that no other player in the entire world can do. Things that are almost difficult to discover and understand sometimes. Challenging Elias as a skills coach is difficult. I feel a tension, almost a little nervousness, before all our sessions together as I know that I am facing a challenging situation as a coach. I have to deliver at my top level. And I love that nerve.
And this summer has been awesome! Elias is stronger physically than ever before but above all there is now a balance between his physical and technical skill set. One of the strongest memories from our summer together is when his hip and upper body 'clicked'. With that, so many pieces fell into place. He takes on speed and power with smoothness. His flow is on 🔥!" Daniel Broberg said on Instagram.

However, as the 2025-26 season began, Elias Pettersson began to look like he did last season, not engaged in the play and a bit slow, which began to worry some, but one person who isn't too bothered by his start is Jim Rutherford, the team's President of Hockey Operations.
Jim Rutherford speaks about expectations for Elias Pettersson during 2025-26 season
While making an appearance during the first intermission of Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey earlier this week, Jim Rutherford was asked about his expectations for Elias Pettersson this season.
Rutherford shared that the organization wants to see him be a good two-way player and believe he has done a good job on the defensive side of things early on this year, which is a good sign given he'll be facing off against his opponents' best players on a nightly basis.
He went on to add that they're not expecting Pettersson to just "flip the switch" and get back to being a 100-110 point player this year, with his two-way play more important to the team than just being able to produce offensively, however, they do want him to be a bit of a difference maker this season, something he hasn't been since early on in the 2023-24 campaign.
"He needs to be a good two-way player. He's our number-one centre, he's going to be matched up against the other teams' best players all the time, and in the early going he's done a good job on the defensive side of the puck." Rutherford said.
He added, "But I agree with what you're saying, we feel the same way, coming off the year he had he's not going to flip the switch and all of a sudden get 110 points again, although he's capable, he has the skill level to do that. But we'll really look at his two-way play and how the team ends up doing is going to be important as to the impact that he has, and it's more about can he impact the games at the right time? It's not about whether he gets 100 points, can he be a difference maker? We know he can, we'll see if he can do that."

Last night, Pettersson was much better than his first three games, registering an assist along with one shot and three blocks while also getting a big increase in ice time, finishing third among Canucks forwards at 20:33.
Hopefully the Sundsvall, Sweden native can use last night's game as a building block and can begin that climb towards being an elite player for the Vancouver Canucks once again, with another opportunity to prove himself coming on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
