The Vancouver Canucks' management group could have plenty of cap space to work with this summer once the free agent market opens on Canada Day.
Teams around the National Hockey League, especially those tight to the cap, are going to get a bit of relief next season as
the salary cap is expected to jump to $95.5 million USD.
For the Vancouver Canucks in this case, it'll open up some additional money for them to work with between their own pending unrestricted free agents, as well as on July 1st when the market opens up.
Vancouver Canucks' cap space heading into NHL Free Agency 2025
Heading into the summer, the Vancouver Canucks have plenty of work to do with their roster, including the need for some depth down the middle, whether that's an internal or external fix, that remains to be seen.
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin also has a handful of players on expiring contracts including
Brock Boeser,
Pius Suter and
Derek Forbort, who can become UFA's on Canada Day.
Meanwhile, Finnish rookie
Aatu Raty is set to become a restricted free agent, so he's not going anywhere, but they'll need to get a deal done that works for both player and team, hopefully, a multi-year contract.
According to PuckPedia, the Vancouver Canucks and Patrik Allvin are projected to have $14.15 million USD in cap space to work with this summer, which could bode well for the team, but also lead to some difficult situations.
Hypothetically speaking, if the Vancouver Canucks were to lock up both Brock Boeser and Pius Suter, combined it'll likely cost around $12.5-13 million annually, not leaving them much wiggle room to get other deals done, unless they turn to the trade market for a money in, money out type of move.
As for that aforementioned depth down the middle Vancouver is seeking, if they do search externally for help, there are a number of intriguing options for Patrik Allvin to consider, at varying costs, including
Ryan Donato,
Alex Iafallo and
Jack Roslovic.
It's going to be an interesting summer in Vancouver to say the least and Patrik Allvin is going to have to make smart decisions when it comes to spending that $14.15 million the team has available.
