MAJOR | Jets place former captain on unconditional waivers to buyout contract
It's an end of an era for the Winnipeg Jets. After parts of 13 seasons with the Thrashers/Jets organization, Blake Wheeler is set to have his contract bought out.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Winnipeg Jets have placed Wheeler on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract buyout, which will make him an unrestricted free agent tomorrow afternoon.
"The Winnipeg Jets are processing Blake Wheelers buyout. He will be on waivers today. There will be a number of teams with interest in signing the veteran as a free agent, including the Dallas Stars." Dreger said.
Wheeler, 36, had one year remaining on his contract prior to the buyout with a cap hit of $8.25 million. His buyout will last two seasons and cost the Jets $2.75 million against the cap each year.
The Plymouth, Minnesota native joined the Jets organization part-way through the 2010-11 season when they were known as the Atlanta Thrashers. Prior to the start of the 2022-23 campaign, Wheeler has the captaincy stripped from him after six seasons.
In 897 games with Atlanta and Winnipeg, Wheeler had 812 points (262 goals, 250 assists), 610 penalty minutes and was aplus-25.
