LATEST | Former Canuck Oliver Ekman-Larsson linked to three Cup contenders
It was quite a shock when Jim Benning announced that the Canucks had acquired Oliver Ekman-Larsson and his massive contract from the Arizona Coyotes. It was an even bigger shock when Patrik Allvin announced that the team would buy out the remainder of his contract.
The 31-year-old will be hitting the free agent market for the first time in his career, and teams are lining up to acquire the veteran defenseman. Frank Seravalli revealed it was expected that the Boston Bruins, the Vegas Golden Knights and the Tampa Bay Lightning would be submitting their offers to the Swede defender.
At this point, it sure looks like the blueliner will have an opportunity to redeem himself and prove that he belongs in the NHL. It had become quite clear that his play wasn't worth the $8.25M he was being paid, but under a more reasonable contract, he could still be very useful to an NHL team.
OEL took part in 133 games with the Canucks, during which he collected 51 points. Could he go back to his former self in a new organization? Could he go back to the steady two-way 40-points-producing defenseman he once was?
