Last month, Smith replied to a tweet saying that he needs to bring a National Hockey League franchise to Utah and Salt Lake City by saying 'in motion'.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman discussed the topic on his '32 Thoughts' podcast earlier this week and he believes that Salt Lake City could be on the NHL's radar down the line as they're expected to get a new arena if their bid is successful for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics.
But now with the news that the Arizona Coyotes are likely to be on the move, could Smith get the NHL franchise he's desiring? It's certainly possible and they could play out of the 20,000-seat Vivint Arena, which Ryan Smith also owns.
TSN's Darren Dreger also wondered if Salt Lake City now becomes a relocation option rather than waiting for an expansion franchise.
The NHL has held pre-season games in Salt Lake City every year since 2018, except 2020, and will be returning there again in October when the Los Angeles Kings take on the San Jose Sharks.
