MAJOR | IIHF referees overturn a major penalty on team Canada's defenceman
The IIHF has always been running their own rules and has always been known to be a bit more rigid on its calls, often throwing players on mitigated plays.
Ty Nelson, a Seattle Kraken 2022 second-round pick, was caught off foot and delivered a hit on one of the Latvian forwards. As a result, the hit looked like the defenceman had attempted to provide a knee hit.
The referee automatically called a penalty on the play, even making it reviewable for a game-misconduct significant penalty. At that point, the belief was that the Canadian would be getting either a major or, at the very least, a minor penalty. The sequence, however, led to an unprecedented ending; the referees overturned the play and annulled the penalty:
This event sequence will spark an interesting debate as to whether or not the NHL should make their penalty calls reviewable.
