Michael Russo believes the worst possible thing for Pettersson and his agent doesn't deny it
The Vancouver Canucks signed their superstar centerman Elias Pettersson in 2021 to $22.05M and 3 years. That contract will only be up in 2024, but he'll be eligible for a renewal as soon as July 1st 2023.
The Swede has been having quite an oustanding season with 50 points and 39 games. He's explosion has been one of the only good things in Vancouver this year. Though, the Athletic Hockey Insider Micheal Russo made a statement that isn't reassuring for his future in Vancouver. On the Athletic Podcast, he stated the following:
«My gut says Elias is gonna want to move on gut and a little bit of knowledge. [] I just think that with Pettersson there's some behind the scenes stuff there that would probably make him want to go elsewhere.»
That's quite the statement to make about the future Restricted Free Agent. We know there's been lots of distractions lately and the management's group has made questionable decision since they've been in place. His agent, Pat Brisson, was on Donnie and Dhali yesterday and here's what he had to say:
«Elias loves VAN, he hates losing. July 1st we can discuss and explore a contract with Vancouver and we will.»
Like a good card player he did not reveal his game, though he did reveal a major piece of information when he said: «he hates losing». My guess is that for Pettersson it may not be a matter of AAV, but more of what the team's plan is, if there's one, and if it fits what Pettersson wants for his future.
Moving forward, the Canucks are on the verge of potentially losing their captain Bo Horvat, can they really afford to lose Pettersson as well?
