Once the season ended, the Canucks' management group identified their top 3 priorities. 1. Cap Space, 2. Défensive help, 3. 3rd Line Centerman. While it was rumored that the Canucks would be pursuing Dan Milstein's client Ivan Barbashev, they may have to turn to trades to fill that centerman line behind Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller.
A trade proposal was drawn up to bring in that much-needed 3rd line centerman and shed some cap along the way.
TO ARIZONA - Nils Hoglander - 25% retention on Boeser- 2023 3rd Rounder Toronto (From VAN)- 2024 4th Rounder NJ (From VAN)
TO NEW YORK - Brock Boeser (75% AAV)- Jet Woo
TO VANCOUVER - Jean-Gabriel Pageau
The Canucks would be acquiring Pageau who's consistently been one of the league 3rd line centerman. He could fill the void left open by Horvat's departure down the middle. He has a cap hit worth $5M for the next 3 years, while Boeser's represents $6.65M over the next 2.
Pageau is a right-handed shot centerman who takes care of business in his own end. He excels on the penalty-kill, on the faceoff dots and he's been a steady 40 points producer for the last 4 years. He'd be a veteran addition to this group since he'll be turning 31 in November.
While I like the idea of adding an experienced veteran to lead the third line and the player it-selfs, this may be too steep of a price for the Canucks. They'd end up shedding only $1.65M in salary, but they'd be losing, Boeser, Hoglander, Woo, and 2 Draft picks.
At this point, it's really a matter of how much do the Canucks really need to shed that $1.65M in salary and how much is it worth.
