*WATCH*: Mike Matheson is fined by the NHL for a violent reverse hit and gets handed a correction from Matthew Tkachuk later on
Some fans still hold a grudge against Mike Matheson after the event that occurred a few years back when he had an encounter with a younger Elias Pettersson.
The Montreal Canadiens hosted the Floride Panthers last night and the game eventually got out of hand, multiple penalties were awarded, and multiple fights happened.
Matheson was involved in a puck possession battle early in the game. He was being tracked by the experienced veteran Eric Staal and before he even touched the puck threw a violent reverse hit. No penalties were called on the play. Now the NHL has intervened and granted Matheson a $5K fine. Here's the play:
Though it didn't end there, the game kept on going and the cheap shots were flying from both sides. Up to such a point that Matthew Tkachuk avenged his fallen teammates and dropped the gloves on Mike Matheson. It gave us a violent fistfight like we rarely see nowadays.
Eric Staal never made it back to the game after the hit, should the NHL make the rule regarding reverse hit clearer? It definitely seems like the officials have no clue what to call on these plays. Was Matheson's punishment enough? Or should he have been suspended?
